Your Questions About iPad For Musicians

Paul asks…
iPad 2 vs iPod touch 4g what would be best for a musician?
If I were to get the iPad i would use it put all my music sheets on there…perhaps mix a couple tracks here and there, even though the software is a bit basic, but people have told if you want to be able to transfer documents back and forth, i should get an android tablet instead. The iPod touch is in the mix because i just want one, shoot amateur vids and probably mix small time things as well and of course surf the web.

David answers:
Get the iPad!

Ken asks…
I am looking to get an iPad for high school. Should I, and if so what extra components will I need?
Okay so I’m fourteen and I’m going into a vocational technical high school, looking to either take Cullinary Arts or Computer Aided Design, Marketing is my fall-back. I need to get a laptop anyway to write papers and do shop work, but I was looking at the iPad and it looks like it may be able to replace the laptop idea. Now I’m not sure if my CAD instructor will give me a software for my computer, but I hope he/she doesn’t, because my mom has a good year left in college and I can’t take up space on her laptop with software. I hear that a keyboard and iWork are both recommended for long-term typing. Now if the shop I will take doesn’t give you a software for computer design I will only need an iPad for typing papers and doing book reports and projects for school. I am also a musician, so if I get the iPad I will also use it to read sheet music via .pdf format and rest the ipad on the sheet music rest to save paper and instead read sheet music on the iPad, and also write my songs and manage and track my sells of singles and records on iTunes. So someone out there, please help me decide; laptop or iPad?

David answers:
GET AN IPAD
YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
I bought it when it came out, I was taking summer school and it helped me A LOT!
Don’t listen to other people who hate it, they just hate macs in general and will put down any mac product out there.
The ipad does wonders …so trust a fellow computer technician and get it

Laura asks…
What should I buy? iPad or MacBook Pro?
I’m a musician who already has a mac mini in my studio. I have an iPod classic 160gb that I use just for music. I don’t have an iPod touch. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about buying the next gen iPad for traveling, but if I got a macbook Pro, I could technically have a portable studio in a way. So which is better?

David answers:
I would suggest you to buy Macbook Pro instead of iPad because as you have mentioned that you are a musician so definitely Macbook would help you more in making your work more easy and good and also it provides more features than iPad which would definitely be helpful for you in many different aspects as well so when you have a chance to buy a product who offers much more functionality, then there is not a question of buying a product with less functions. So I would recommend you to go for Macbook Pro.
I recommend this article written by an actual user, it should help you decide whether to get it:

John asks…
Your opinion on Garage band for iPad?
My iPad 3 is coming in the post very very soon and I would like to know what you think of Garage Band. I’m a singer and musician and to me it looks like a great app to help compose and play songs. Is Garage Band good or is it a waste of time? I would love to hear your opinions, tips or suggestions.
Thanks.

David answers:
I think it’s fine.

Maria asks…
Is there a program that can write music for you?
I just figured because I saw the Ipad commercial and it has a girl playing piano on sheet music for the Ipad. Is there an App or another system where you can plug your piano in, play, and it will write music for what your playing?
The beatles never knew how to read music, they did it by ear, I’m sure this would allow musicians that go by ear to put their songs on paper.
Thanks

David answers:
If programs like Finale are too expensive for you, try breaking this up into two steps, by first recording your instrument into a sequencer (there’s several freeware ones around – if you have a Mac you already have GarageBand, which is excellent). The sequencer will produce a MIDI file for you, then use a freeware music notation program to load the MIDI file and output printable sheet music from it.
Sorry for not mentioning more freeware programs for either to try, the ones I use are no longer available or not for free… Google will help there.
